The Royal Family of the United Kingdom is one the most instantly and widely recognized institutions in the world. Since 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has bore witness to a great volume of cultural and social changes. This included the gradual diminishment of political power that the head of state and Royal Family possessed. Yet, over the course of many decades, despite experiencing a reduction of political impact in Britain, the Royal Family has played an important role in British society. In the 1990s, republicanism in the United Kingdom grew, partly on account of negative publicity associated with the Royal Family — for instance, immediately following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. However, polls from 2002 to 2007 showed that around 70–80% of the British public supported the continuation of the monarchy.
